When we wrote our welcome post back in March, we had three products in the works. It's August now, and the list has grown quite a bit.
Here's where everything stands.
## The lineup, mid-2026
**SwypeLearn** is our flagship. It's the product families keep coming back to without being nudged, and the one getting the most of our attention this year: sharper placement, wider subject coverage, and a lot of unglamorous work on making two minutes in a waiting room genuinely count. Almost everything we know about holding a kid's attention without gimmicks was learned here first, then carried into everything since.
**PaperBridge** has had our spring. We went deep into CCEYA compliance alongside Ontario daycares (our [record-keeping guide](/blog/cceya-record-keeping-requirements-ontario-daycares) is still the most-read thing we've published), and the product is getting close. If you run a licensed centre and want early access, get in touch.
**CogniQ** keeps growing steadily. It's live, it's stable, and the lessons it taught us are built into every newer product on this list.
**Sensei** launched in April with structured interview prep for engineers. The response from the engineering community has been the most vocal of anything we've shipped.
**Recap** launched in May and quietly became the tool we ourselves use every single day. Your work deserves a better memory.
**Rounded** opened early access in July. Parent-led daily practice for kids, with no points, no streaks, and no ads. The early families are wonderful and their feedback is shaping every release.
## One more thing
There's one more project in the lab, and it's the one we're most excited about by a distance. We're deliberately early with it: detailed exploration, sketches, and initial feasibility tests rather than a build. The idea is ambitious enough that we'd rather find out now whether it holds up.
What we'll say is this. If it works, it changes how a child learns by bringing the rest of the family into it, across generations rather than across a screen. That's the whole bet. More when it's time.
## What's next
The rest of 2026 is about going deeper on what we've already launched: pushing SwypeLearn further, getting PaperBridge into daycares, graduating Recap out of beta, and growing Rounded family by family. The one in the lab gets our curiosity; the rest get our hours. We'll keep writing as we go.

How SwypeLearn Knows What Your Child Needs Next

Every parent who watches their kid use SwypeLearn eventually asks the same question: how does it decide what to show next?
Fair question. The answer is the part of the app we are proudest of, so here is a look under the hood.
## Three signals, watched quietly
Each swipe gives the engine three pieces of information.
**Accuracy** is the obvious one: right or wrong. On its own, though, accuracy hides a lot. A child can get the right answer while barely hanging on.
**Speed** fills in some of the picture. Answering "7 x 8" correctly in one second means something different from answering it correctly in nine.
**Hesitation** is the signal most apps ignore and the one we find most honest. A long pause before an answer, even a correct one, usually means the knowledge is still fragile. SwypeLearn treats that pause as information.
Put together, the three signals tell the engine not just what your child knows, but how solidly they know it.
## What the engine does with it
Fragile material comes back sooner. Solid material comes back later, at widening intervals, following the same spaced repetition principle we wrote about in April. Weak spots get a gentle tilt in the challenge mix, so a child who keeps hesitating on word endings quietly sees more of them this week without ever being told they are behind on anything.
That last part is a design choice we care about. The app never announces a weakness, never shows a red score, and never makes remediation feel like a punishment. The difficulty just breathes: a little harder when things are going well, a little softer after a rough patch, always aiming for the level where your child succeeds most of the time but not every time. That is the zone where practice actually changes something.
## Progress you can feel more than see
Kids experience all of this as a game that somehow stays interesting. Parents see it differently: the reading gets smoother, the math answers come quicker, and the app can show you the trend when you want the details.
One honest note to close. SwypeLearn is a practice layer, not a school replacement. Teachers teach. What we do is make sure the practice between lessons is frequent, targeted, and something your child does not have to be dragged into.

A First Look at Rounded: A Few Minutes a Day, With You

Some kids grow up in homes where dinner-table conversation quietly teaches them to argue a point, tell a story, and play with numbers in their head. Nobody calls it enrichment. It's just the ambient inheritance of how the house talks.
Rounded is our attempt to give every family that, on purpose.
## What Rounded is
Rounded is a calm, parent-led enrichment app for kids roughly 4 to 12. A few minutes a day, your child practises the things that compound for a lifetime: speaking clearly, listening well, and thinking in strategies instead of memorized answers.
Two modules are in early access today:
**Oracy.** Your child listens to a short story, then says what they think. Out loud, in their own words. Over weeks, you can literally hear the difference: longer sentences, better reasons, more curiosity.
**Numeracy.** Quick, playful challenges that build genuine number sense and mental-math strategy. Kids are placed by mastery, not age, so your child is always working at their real level.
## What Rounded is not
This is the part we're most opinionated about. Rounded has no points, no streaks, no leaderboards, and no ads. There's no cartoon mascot demanding attention. The AI behind the scenes is a coach, never a companion, and **you** are the one your child practises with. Rounded warms them up and then hands you something to talk about at dinner.
Sessions end with a small artifact for the parent: what your child worked on, a moment worth asking about, and every so often a then-versus-now recording of their voice that will sneak up on you.

Two Minutes at a Time: The Case for Micro-Learning

There is a version of learning we all grew up with: sit down, open the book, concentrate for an hour. It works for some people, on some days, at some ages. For most kids on most days, it collapses somewhere around minute nine.
Micro-learning starts from a different premise. Instead of asking a child to hold focus for a long block, it asks for a few seconds at a time, many times, spread across the day. A word to read. A sum to solve. A pattern to spot. Done, next.
It sounds too small to matter. The math says otherwise.
## Small sessions, absurd totals
A single SwypeLearn challenge takes about two to five seconds. A two-minute session is somewhere between 25 and 40 real attempts at reading, math, memory, or focus. Do that once a day and a child logs over a thousand practice repetitions a month, each one an active retrieval rather than passive review.
Compare that with the hour-long Sunday session, where the first ten minutes are warm-up, the last twenty are fatigue, and most of the middle is rereading. Frequency beats duration, and it is not close.
## Why short works so well for kids
Short challenges fit inside a child's natural attention span instead of fighting it, so practice ends before frustration starts. Every swipe gives instant feedback, and the next challenge is always one gesture away, which keeps the loop moving faster than boredom can catch it.
There is also an honest psychological trick in the format. Because each challenge is tiny, there is no intimidating wall of work to avoid. Nobody procrastinates a five-second task.
## The screen time reframe
Kids already reach for a screen in every idle moment. That habit is not going anywhere, and pretending otherwise has not worked for any family we know. The realistic question is what the screen does during those moments.

Inside CogniQ: What Cognitive Training Does for a Growing Brain

When people hear "cognitive training for kids," they usually picture flashcards and a stopwatch. CogniQ is not that, so we thought we would walk through what it actually is and why we built it the way we did.
## The skills underneath the subjects
School measures subjects. Math, reading, science. But underneath every subject sit a handful of core abilities: how well a child can hold attention, how much they can keep in working memory, how quickly they process what they see and hear, and how comfortably they reason through something new.
Those abilities are trainable, especially between the ages of 6 and 13 when the brain is at its most flexible. A child who gets faster at processing and steadier at focusing gets better at everything built on top of it.
## Nine modules, one child at a time
[CogniQ](https://www.cogniq.ca) is organized into nine structured modules, each aimed at one of those core abilities. A few examples of how that feels in practice:
- **FlashRead** flashes words one at a time to build reading speed, then checks comprehension with three quick questions.
- **FlipFocus** trains working memory through pair-matching, then adds rule switches that force the brain to change gears.
- **LogicSpark** works through patterns, sequences, and analogies.
- **MathFlow** runs short mental math drills that adjust to speed and accuracy.
- **SpeakSpark** gives kids a topic, thirty seconds to think, and a chance to say what they came up with.
The structure is deliberate. This is a guided, curriculum-style program rather than a box of minigames. Each session has a place in a sequence, and each module adapts to your child's level. A strong reader who struggles with working memory will get more FlipFocus and less FlashRead, without anyone having to decide that manually.

If you're like most of us, you have no idea. The work happened, it mattered, and then it evaporated. Which is a problem, because your standup is tomorrow, your performance review is next quarter, and your resume is permanently six months out of date.

Spaced Repetition for Kids: Why Ten Minutes Today Beats an Hour on Sunday

Here is an uncomfortable fact about the study session your child did on Sunday: by Wednesday, most of it is gone.
That is not a discipline problem or an attention problem. It is just how memory works. In the 1880s, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped what he called the forgetting curve, and the shape of it has held up ever since. We forget most of what we learn within days, unless something interrupts the forgetting.
The interruption that works best is surprisingly simple: recall the thing again, right around the time you were about to lose it.
## What spaced repetition actually is
Spaced repetition means reviewing material in short sessions spread over time, with the gaps getting longer as you get better. Recall a word today, then in two days, then in a week, then in a month. Each successful recall flattens the forgetting curve a little more.
Two details matter, and they matter even more for kids.
First, the review has to be active. Rereading a page feels productive, but it is the memory equivalent of watching someone else do push-ups. The brain strengthens what it retrieves, so a tiny quiz beats a long reread every time.
Second, sessions should be short. A seven-year-old does not have forty minutes of focused review in them, and the good news is they do not need it. Five minutes of genuine recall, repeated across days, does more than a marathon session that ends in tears at the kitchen table.
## What this looks like at home
You do not need software to start. A few habits go a long way:
- Ask your child to tell you what they learned, instead of asking whether they studied. Explaining is retrieval.
- Keep review sessions under ten minutes and stop while it is still going well.
- Mix subjects in one sitting. Jumping between math facts and spelling feels harder, and that difficulty is exactly what makes it stick.
- Come back to old material on purpose. Last month's words are not done just because the test is over.

CCEYA Record-Keeping Requirements: A Complete Guide for Ontario Daycares

If you operate a licensed daycare in Ontario, record-keeping isn't optional. It's the law. The Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (CCEYA) and Ontario Regulation 137/15 set out exactly what records you need to maintain, how they should be organized, and how long you need to keep them. Getting it wrong can mean fines starting at $750 per violation, scaling up to $100,000 for repeat offences.
This guide breaks down every record-keeping requirement in plain language so you can stay compliant without drowning in paperwork.
## What Is the CCEYA?
The Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 is the primary legislation governing licensed child care in Ontario. It replaced the older Day Nurseries Act and introduced a modernized framework covering everything from staff ratios and building standards to nutrition, programming, and documentation.
**Ontario Regulation 137/15** sits underneath the CCEYA and contains the detailed, day-to-day requirements that licensees must follow. When we talk about record-keeping obligations, most of the specific rules come from this regulation.
The Ministry of Education is responsible for licensing, inspecting, and enforcing compliance. Program advisors conduct inspections using a standardized checklist, and they gather evidence through observation, interviews, and most importantly, reviewing your records.
## The Records Every Licensed Daycare Must Maintain
### Children's Records (O. Reg. 137/15, s. 72)
Every child enrolled in your program must have an individual record containing specific information. These records exist to ensure that staff can provide appropriate, responsive care and that critical information is accessible quickly, especially in emergencies.
A child's record must include:
- Full legal name, date of birth, and home address
- Names and contact information of parents or guardians
- Emergency contacts and any custody or access arrangements
- Name and contact details of the child's physician
- Immunization records (for children not yet in school)
- Documentation of allergies, especially anaphylactic allergies
- Any medical conditions that staff need to be aware of
- Individualized plans for children with special needs (section 52)
For infants under one year, the record must also include the parent's written feeding instructions and any physician direction about sleep positioning.
If any required information isn't available, note "parent did not wish to provide" or "not applicable" in the record. This shows inspectors that you made the effort to collect it.
**Retention period:** Children's records must be kept for a minimum of three years after the child's last day attending the centre.
### Daily Attendance Records (O. Reg. 137/15, s. 72(3) and (4))
Daily attendance records are non-negotiable. You must track which children are present each day, by licensed age group. These records serve several critical purposes:
- They confirm you're within your licensed capacity and ratios
- They support evacuation procedures (staff must cross-reference attendance during fire drills)
- They help public health units with contact tracing during disease outbreaks
Attendance records must be easily accessible to staff at all times. During an evacuation, program staff must be able to grab the attendance record and verify at the meeting point that every child has been accounted for.
**Failure to maintain proper daily attendance records can result in an administrative penalty of $750, with amounts increasing for repeat violations.**
### Accident and Injury Reports (O. Reg. 137/15, s. 36(4))
When a child is injured while in your care, you must create a written accident report documenting what happened, and you must provide a copy to the child's parent. The Ministry of Education provides a standard accident report template through the Child Care Licensing System (CCLS). Using the standard template is recommended to ensure you're capturing all required information.
### Staff Records
You must maintain records for every employee, volunteer, and student working at your centre. These records must include:
- Proof of a valid criminal reference check with vulnerable sector screening (renewed every 5 years)
- Staff qualification documentation (such as ECE registration)
- First aid certification
### Policies and Procedures Documentation
The CCEYA requires documented policies and procedures covering health and safety, emergency preparedness, nutrition, programming, and behaviour guidance. These policies must be compiled in a parent handbook accessible to all families.
### Serious Occurrence Reports
Certain incidents must be reported to the Ministry of Education through the Child Care Licensing System within 24 hours. These include a child going missing, a serious injury requiring medical attention, an allegation of abuse, or a disaster on the premises. Serious occurrence reports must also be posted for parents to see.
### Insurance Documentation
Under section 71 of O. Reg. 137/15, licensees must carry comprehensive general liability insurance and personal injury coverage. Failure to produce proof of current insurance during an inspection can lead to enforcement action.
## Can You Keep Records Digitally?
**Yes, and this is a significant development.** As of March 8, 2021, amendments to O. Reg. 137/15 explicitly allow Ontario daycares to maintain records in digital-only formats. Before this change, many centres were keeping both paper binders and digital copies, essentially doubling their administrative workload.
The regulation now states that any record, report, or document required under O. Reg. 137/15 may be created or maintained in electronic format unless otherwise specified. This means your children's records, attendance logs, accident reports, staff files, and policy documents can all live digitally.
This is a major opportunity for centres to:
- Reduce printing costs (estimated at an average of $1,800 per centre annually)
- Eliminate the storage burden of physical binders
- Make records easier to find during inspections
However, going digital comes with its own compliance considerations. Your digital records must be easily accessible to program advisors during inspections, organized, searchable, and available on-site. You also need a reliable backup strategy to prevent data loss.
## Common Record-Keeping Mistakes
**Missing or incomplete children's records.** The most common issue inspectors find is missing information in children's files. An outdated emergency contact, an expired immunization record, or a missing allergy plan. A regular audit of your files (at least quarterly) can prevent this.
**Attendance records that don't match licensed groups.** Your attendance records must be organized by licensed age group, not just a general sign-in sheet. If your centre has infant, toddler, and preschool rooms, each needs its own attendance tracking.
**Unsigned or undated accident reports.** An accident report without a date or parent signature doesn't demonstrate compliance. Make sure your process includes a step where the parent acknowledges receipt.
**Outdated policies.** If your parent handbook references the old Day Nurseries Act or hasn't been updated to reflect current CCEYA requirements, that's a compliance gap. Policies should be reviewed and updated at least annually.
**Criminal reference checks past their five-year renewal date.** This is an easy one to let slip, especially in centres with long-tenured staff. Set calendar reminders well in advance of expiry dates.

So what is this place? It's where we'll be sharing what we're working on, what we're learning, and the occasional behind-the-scenes look at how things get built around here. No corporate fluff. Just real updates from the people actually making the stuff.
## A little about us
We're a small team based in Toronto and Calgary building software that (we hope) makes people's lives a little easier. Our first few products are focused on education and operations. Think tools for daycares, learning apps for kids, that kind of thing.
We started Nov8 Labs because we kept running into the same problem. The tools people needed either didn't exist or were way too complicated. So we figured, why not build them ourselves?
