Here is an uncomfortable fact about the study session your child did on Sunday: by Wednesday, most of it is gone.

That is not a discipline problem or an attention problem. It is just how memory works. In the 1880s, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped what he called the forgetting curve, and the shape of it has held up ever since. We forget most of what we learn within days, unless something interrupts the forgetting.

The interruption that works best is surprisingly simple: recall the thing again, right around the time you were about to lose it.

What spaced repetition actually is

Spaced repetition means reviewing material in short sessions spread over time, with the gaps getting longer as you get better. Recall a word today, then in two days, then in a week, then in a month. Each successful recall flattens the forgetting curve a little more.

Two details matter, and they matter even more for kids.

First, the review has to be active. Rereading a page feels productive, but it is the memory equivalent of watching someone else do push-ups. The brain strengthens what it retrieves, so a tiny quiz beats a long reread every time.

Second, sessions should be short. A seven-year-old does not have forty minutes of focused review in them, and the good news is they do not need it. Five minutes of genuine recall, repeated across days, does more than a marathon session that ends in tears at the kitchen table.

What this looks like at home

You do not need software to start. A few habits go a long way:

  • Ask your child to tell you what they learned, instead of asking whether they studied. Explaining is retrieval.
  • Keep review sessions under ten minutes and stop while it is still going well.
  • Mix subjects in one sitting. Jumping between math facts and spelling feels harder, and that difficulty is exactly what makes it stick.
  • Come back to old material on purpose. Last month's words are not done just because the test is over.
